It was on January 15, 2018, that Loisaida lost one of its most beloved figures, caretaker and restaurateur, Adela Fargas. Born in Carolina, Puerto Rico, Adela migrated to New York City in 1973 in search of a better future and, together with her family, labored to open Casa Adela in Manhattan’s Lower east Side [established 1976]. Always seen with a charismatic smile, an apron and a head-sash, Adela routinely spread her love for cooking by serving the faithful customers who graced her ever-popular bistro. Her care, culinary skills and acts of generosity were legendary in the neighborhood as were the annual jam sessions that she sponsored, along with her family, to celebration the Loisaida community.
In late 2018, the team of Gary Cruz and William Rosario (Yagrumo Productions) released a documentary film based on the life of the late Adela Fargas. This is Adela’s story…
